Overview of Cartridge Mechanical Seal

A Cartridge Mechanical Seal is a complete, self-contained sealing device developed to seal rotating machinery like pumps, mixers, compressors, agitators, etc. against leakage. Installing cartridge seals is fast, easy, and accurate—unlike traditional component seals, which require installation using a press or tool. All parts of the assembly (seal faces, gland plate, shaft sleeve, springs, O-rings and locking mechanisms) are combined into a single compact assembly.

These seals work on two extremely smooth seal faces, which form a fluid film of a micron thickness, reducing friction and leakage. Cartridge seals are very popular due to their ability to save time in maintenance, prevent shaft damage and enhance the efficiency of operation. They are widely applied in chemical processing, pharmaceutical plants, wastewater treatment, food processing, petroleum processing and heavy industries where a reliable seal is desired under high pressure and high temperature.

Working Principles of Cartridge Mechanical Seal

A Cartridge Mechanical Seal is a seal that functions by forming a tight sealing fit between a rotating shaft and stationary equipment housing. The face that rotates with the shaft, and the other face is stationary and is held in place in the gland plate. The two faces have been ground to very smooth surfaces so that a thin layer of lubricating fluid can form between them. This ultra-thin film reduces friction and helps to minimise heat generation and to stop fluid seepage.

Proper contact pressure between the seal faces is provided by springs contained within the cartridge, and a balance of hydraulic pressure is provided during operation. Secondary seals as O-rings ensure complete sealing performance also in critical industrial service applications and with secondary paths to prevent leakage.

Cartridge Mechanical Seal Types

Material Options

Materials Used in Cartridge Mechanical Seal

The right material pairing directly determines how long a seal lasts and whether it handles your process fluid without failure. Below are the materials available for this seal type — we select or recommend based on your application.

Carbon / Graphite
Resin Impregnated Seal Face

Self-lubricating with good chemical resistance. The standard rotating face material for general-duty and water pump applications.

Silicon Carbide
SiC — Sintered & Reaction Bonded Seal Face

Exceptional hardness, wear resistance, and chemical compatibility. The preferred mating face material for demanding applications.

Tungsten Carbide
TC — Cobalt & Nickel Binder Seal Face

Maximum resistance to shock loads, vibration, and abrasive slurries. Used where SiC may chip or fracture under impact.

Stainless Steel
SS 304 / SS 316 / SS 316L Hardware

Springs, glands, sleeves, and retainer components. Corrosion-resistant structural integrity across all seal types.

NBR
Nitrile Rubber Secondary Seal

Standard O-ring material for oils, fuels, and general water service. Temperature range: -40°C to +120°C.

EPDM
Ethylene Propylene Diene Secondary Seal

Excellent resistance to hot water, steam, and dilute acids. Used where NBR would swell or degrade.

Viton / FKM
Fluoroelastomer Secondary Seal

High-temperature O-ring for chemical, petroleum, and aggressive fluid applications. Range: -20°C to +200°C.

Metal Bellow
SS 316L / Hastelloy C Bellow

Replaces elastomeric secondary seals entirely. Ideal for extreme temperatures (cryogenic to +450°C) where no elastomer survives.

Material selection depends on your process fluid, temperature, pressure, and shaft speed. Contact our team for a recommendation specific to your application.
